How Can I Rap? These Tips Will Help Your Rap Game
Have you ever asked yourself, "
how can I rap?" and wondered if you were ever capable of doing so? Have you always wanted to rap or sound like one of your favorite rappers, but just felt that you couldn't rap at all, or that your delivery wasn't as great as you'd want it to sound? Or do you feel like you have the talent but want to polish up on your skills a bit more than you feel content with? Do any of these scenarios sound more or less like you or how you feel and think?
So of course, with rap and hip hop music being so popular, it's no surprise that people want the question, "
how can I rap?" answered. Hip hop has climbed up and become more commonplace in the years that it's been around, and continues to bring more fans and listeners to the table that also want to be rappers. It's also brought a swarm of
rap beats to the internet that never existed before! So while there is no "Next greatest rapper" type reality shows that everyone can jump to (the only one I ever really remember is P.Diddy's Making The Band, and Miss Rap Supreme), there are things you can do to start honing in on your skills and talent and elevate your skills to the next level. The more you push and work on your skills, the greater you'll become. But, that also ties in to doing your research and feeling out hip hop and rap for what it is. So

Back to the question at hand, "
how can I rap?" To get your rap game on, you have to at least have a feel for what rap music sounds like. If you have never been into it, then you will need to grasp all kinds of rap music first and foremost before you can get into finding and increasing your skills and talent. Give yourself a few months of listening to a variety of different styles of hip hop and
rap lyrics, from east coast rap, to dirty south rap, to 'backpack rap' and more. Once you get a feel for the style you like most, stick to that and listen to more music from those particular rap artists and hip hop albums that you enjoy. The more you listen, the more you'll feel out things like delivery of
lyrics, keeping on tempo with the beat, the
rap beats themselves that are being used (which you'll need to feel out for when you're ready to get beats for your own project), the rhyme and flow of the rap and lyrics, and the presence (whether aggressive, playful, etc).
Another answer to elevate the "
how can I rap" question, is to practice writing lyrics. Don't go the typical non skills route of trying to make everything rhyme, like:
"I pull out my gun, now I'm on the run,
I'm running in the sun, this running isn't fun"
You're not trying to write a Dr. Seuss rhyme, you're trying to get into a flow of delivering poetic lyrics while addressing the audience on a creative note. So, something a bit more like:
"I pull out my gun while I'm out on the run, the sun's
beaming... gleaming on my tek while my mind's dreamin'
will I survive, it's just a matter of these kats gunnin',
point blank, no escape while my heart's thumping"
Okay, so I'm no major rap artist, but as you can see, the words flow but don't have to rhyme for every single word to the beat. You have to play with the flow of the words and be creative most of all. The more creative, the better the
rap lyrics, such as:
"the fight's hotter than the sands of the Sahara Desert.."
Comparing things to other things makes for great punchlines here and there. Of course, there are better ones than that line I put up there, but that line above would be better than something like:
"the fight's hot, yo it's too hot I can't stand it"
Another tip for answering the "
how can I rap?" question is to find out how aggressive or playful your delivery is. You can build your charisma (especially for doing live shows if you plan for it) by looking in the mirror and delivering your lines. You can hold a paper in front of you for practice but try to remember the lines you wrote and look at yourself in the mirror with aggression (or playfulness if your
lyrics are more comical) and hear your tone when spitting your lyrics. No one wants to hear rap artists who have no tone or assertion in their delivery, almost as though they're straight up reading. You gotta deliver in your mind like some of your favorite rappers. The tone sets the standard for how people will enjoy listening to your rap. After all, rappers and singers alike are created by popularity of the crowds listening to your music. If people don't like your
rap lyrics or music, you won't make it, unless you're just doing it for hobby's sake.
